Information for International applicants

  1. a pass at Advanced Matriculation Level at Grade C or better in Physics, and a pass at Advanced Matriculation Level in one other subject or
  2. )the EASA Part 66 License or equivalent or

    (c)a technical diploma (such as HND/HTD) or equivalent.

If applicants have other qualifications considered to be sufficient, they may be exempted by the University Admissions Board, on the advice of the Institute Admissions Committee, from the whole or part of these special course requirements for admission.

Admission to the Course may, with the approval of Senate, be restricted to applicants who are nominated by an organisation that commissions the Course, provided that such applicants are eligible for admission in terms of the above paragraphs. Such restriction shall be announced at the time of the call for applications.

The programme of study is designed to provide you with a university level education to pursue a career in aircraft maintenance. It is designed to complement EASA Part 66 training and is intended to give you an academic standing in the broader field of the industry in which you will be working in. Areas that the diploma will cover include; Aerospace engineering (principles of Flight, Aerospace Materials, Aircraft Structures and Aircraft Powerplants); Avionics and Electrical Engineering Technology; Aviation rules and shop-floor operations; and Engineering mathematics.

Requirement for successful completion of Year 2: 31 ECTS credits.

Requirement for successful completion of Diploma in Aviation Maintenance: 60 ECTS credits.


This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2019 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the Diploma in Aviation Maintenance under the auspices of the Institute of Aerospace Technologies.

By the end of the programme, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a sound understanding of the fundamental principles (electrical, mechanical, aeronautical, regulatory, etc.) that make commercial flight and aviation maintenance possible and safe;
  • Describe the functionality and fundamental principles of operation of various aircraft avionics systems on board aircraft and the interaction between different systems;
  • Explain the merits of aircraft structures and design as well as those of the materials and processes used in the industry;
  • Explain the merits of aircraft and turbine powerplant design and technology;
  • Explain the regulatory and operational frameworks associated with Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) organisations.
